AI Ready: 5 Criteria for a Website Truly Visible to AI
The term "AI Ready" has become a buzzword. Everyone claims to be it. But in practice, the vast majority of websites remain invisible to ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, and Gemini. Here is what it actually means.
1. AI crawlability
Your robots.txt must explicitly allow GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, Google-Extended, xAI-Bot (Grok), MistralBot (Mistral Le Chat), DeepSeekBot, and Copilot-Bot — over 30 crawlers in total. Many sites, configured by default or by legacy CMS platforms, block these bots without realizing it.
This is criterion number one, because if AI crawlers cannot read your site, no other effort will make a difference. Check your robots.txt right now.
2. The llms.txt file
This Markdown file summarizes your identity, business, and services in a format designed to be read by LLMs. It serves as your direct introduction to language models: who you are, what you do, and how to contact you.
An emerging standard since 2024, it is now recognized by Perplexity, Claude, and several other models. A well-crafted llms.txt can multiply your visibility in AI responses by 2 to 5 times.
3. JSON-LD structured data
Schema.org markup transmits essential metadata to AI models. Organization, Person, FAQPage, Service, Product: each type addresses a different kind of query. A restaurant that implements LocalBusiness Schema.org will be cited more easily when a user asks "What's a good Italian restaurant in Manhattan?"
JSON-LD is the recommended format — it is clean, non-intrusive, and read as a priority by both Google and LLMs before they even process your HTML content.
4. Factual content architecture
AI models cite content that answers questions directly. Every page should include at least one section structured as a question followed by a direct answer. Question-formatted headings (H2, H3), bullet lists, comparison tables — anything that makes it easy to extract a precise piece of information is a positive signal.
Conversely, pages that are overly promotional with low informational density are systematically ignored by LLMs in favor of more factual sources.
5. Consistency and freshness
A site whose content is coherent, up to date, and non-contradictory will be better represented in models. If your homepage says you are based in New York but other pages mention Chicago, models will struggle to place you correctly — and will prefer a clearer source instead.
Freshness matters too: content that is regularly updated, with visible dates, is preferred over undated or obviously outdated content.
